Course Description

Municipal Planning and Zoning Practice is an online course that introduces students to city planning concepts, municipal governance, and public service. The purpose of this course is to learn about how city planning and zoning are used as practical tools for municipal governance. This course will explore topics from the perspective of what local elected and appointed leaders and staff need to know to effectively guide a municipality, navigate codes and laws, and promote public engagement and civil discourse. Topics will focus on real-world relevancy and prioritizing community investment in residents.

Who Should Take This Course

The Municipal Planning and Zoning Practice course benefits newly elected and appointed decision-makers who serve on public and private sector boards and commissions (such as city councils, planning commissions, boards of zoning appeals, neighborhood or area commissions, and many others). The course is also useful for public sector land developers, real estate professionals, and community activists who seek a more comprehensive perspective on planning from a municipal governance lens, and how they fit in the process.

This online course is co-taught by Kim Burton and Kyle Ezell, both faculty in the City & Regional Planning Program at The Ohio State University. The two have over 40 years of combined experience in public and private sector planning for state and local agencies. Instruction includes real cases using video footage of local council and zoning meetings to illustrate the application of these fundamentals to on-the-ground problem solving.

Students who successfully complete the course receive a certificate of completion from the College of Engineering.
