Frequently Asked Questions

What degree is conferred at graduation?

The degree will be conferred by The Ohio State University just like other Graduate degrees. The diploma has the university’s name and seal and is signed by Chair and Secretary  of the Board of Trustees and by the University President.  It will say “Master of Engineering Management” (not master’s in science or master of arts), since it is a professional degree, like a Master of Business Administration degree. It will have the phrase “prescribed by the Graduate School” because all OSU graduate degrees are from the Graduate School. The College of Engineering does not appear on the diploma, but instead it will appear on a student's transcript.

Does the diploma state this is an online degree?

No. The degree is the same as any other master's degree from The Ohio State University and therefore the diploma does not state it's an online degree.

Is there any on-site residency requirement in the MEM?

No, everything is offered online. The program will have a graduation program each semester, but attendance is optional.

What resources are available to online students at Ohio State?

The Ohio State University wants all Buckeys to be as successful as possible. Services available to online students include advising, mentoring, writing workshops, and career services. More information can be found on the Ohio State Online page.

Can college internships count towards the work experience requirement?

Yes.

Can I enroll in the MEM as a part-time student?

Yes, students can enroll as part-time or full-time. Students can take a specific sequence of courses and complete the degree in 16 - 28 months. Or they may take up to four years to complete the degree. Students can also change their pace during the program. See Course Sequence for more information.

When can I start the MEM?

The MEM program has a rolling admissions process, meaning you can start the degree at three times during the Academic Year: Autumn Semester (late August), Spring Semester (early January), or Summer Term (early May).

When is the application deadline?

Applications are accepted year-round. Applicants are encouraged to apply at least one month before their desired start date. Please contact the program coordinator for more information.

Points of Pride

What happens after I submit my application?

The program administration will contact you once the application is received and verify that the packet is complete. Your complete application packet will then be reviewed by the MEM Graduate Studies Committee. Under normal conditions, you will receive an admissions decision within 5-7 business days or earlier after the committee receives your packet.

Does the program accept transfer credit?

Students may obtain up to three semester hours of credit for class work outside of the MEM curriculum. Acceptance of any transfer credit will be decided by the program Graduate Studies Committee prior to admission.

How much, if any, of the coursework is group-based?

Zero. There is no group work in the MEM. Although students are encouraged to lead a team as part of the project if possible, it’s not required.

I graduated with an engineering degree from an ABET accredited school, but with a cumulative GPA below a 3.0. Will I need to submit a GRE score?

GRE scores may be asked of some applicants. Please contact the program coordinator for additional information.
